Apple unveiled their next major product today: The Apple iPad. Kind of a cheesy name at first, but I'm starting to get used to it. :P

It's supposed to be a kind of tablet, but from what I've seen from it so far, I wouldn't call it that. The iPad is kind of in its own category. It's basically a really big, souped up iPhone. Meant more for media things like watching movies and listening to music than for working on stuff or playing games. Not to say it can't do either of those things, but you definitely won't want to buy one for those purposes.

The main feature I would say is the screen. If there is one thing Apple can make, it's screens (unfortunately they'll never really be put to real gaming purposes). It's a 9.7-inch LED screen and the entire thing supports multi-touch. It has an "IPS display" that basically means you won't lose much clarity when you look at the screen at an angle. Much like the iPhone, the only input device besides the screen is the Home button that takes you back to the main menu (that again looks much like the iPhone) and a microphone.

The Operating System is a more iPhone-like instead of Mac-like than I anticipated. It is even able to run all of the apps and games that iPhone can. However, all of the apps have been super-charged with the 1GHz processor and larger screen. Music looks a lot more like iTunes than an iPod. The YouTube app is capable of streaming HD YouTube videos, something the iPhone cannot. The Photos app is very much like iPhoto (and if you've ever used a Mac, you'll know that is a great feature to have, especially on the go). Finally, Apple is opening a new store for the release of the iPad: The Apple iBook store. As you can probably work out for yourself, Apple will be selling eBooks that will can be stored and read on your iPad. Analysts are literally predicting doom for the Amazon Kindle already. :P

The Apple iPad in all of its glory, held by CEO Steve Jobs.

A real, full web browser that you would expect from a computer, but with the interface of an iPhone.

When needed, a virtual keyboard will appear. Unlike the iPhone, the keyboard is full-size, and Steve Jobs was able to type at full speed.

Listen to music and download music. The iPad syncs to your iTunes account through your computer.

A calendar. I'm showing this because it shows how much Apple put into the interface. It looks great.

iPhone games work on iPad. Exclusive iPad apps will be available later. The development kit was just released today.

Since iPhone apps work on iPad, you can watch live MLB games on your iPad with the beautiful 9.7-inch screen.

The iBook app. I'd imagine it's coming to iPhone as well, but the iPad is naturally a better eBook reader.

A basic word processor for the iPad. I'm not sure how exactly you'll be able to save it or send it to your home computer.

The iPad supports 802.11n WiFi (the latest and most-supported) but if you are with AT&T, you can buy an iPad with 3G capabilities, meaning you can get the Internet anywhere you go. For $15 a month, you get 250MB a month (which should be enough assuming you aren't downloading movies through a phone service :P) and for $30 a month, you get unlimited use.

Speaking of money, how much does the iPad cost? It starts at $499, which is not a bad price tag at all considering Apple's history. Here is a chart of the prices:

Now for the negatives. Apple is making it clear that they aren't trying to replace your laptop with the iPad considering it can only hold up to 64GB of storage. That will scare people away. Next, although the price isn't bad at all, I can't understand why Apple would charge $130 more for an iPad capable of 3G. You have to pay monthly anyway, so charging even more is a little butch. And finally, I am still a little confused on how this will work with your computer. Obviously you won't want to store documents and such on your iPad, you'll want it t obe sent to your computer. Will it be sent over the Internet, through USB, or what? It seems to remain a mystery.

Overall, I am excited for this thing. I'm considering selling my Wii for a 16GB one. It'd make a long bus ride to Florida a lot more fun. :)

It does not look at all appealing. At least to me.

Hitler learns about the iPad (I love these Hitler videos)

Many clans (like our past affiliate, the ODL) have been literally hacked and destroyed simply because of some stupid clan war. I wouldn't necessarily want to get into that, but we have to have some kind of WiFi action. I think inter-clan prevents most of that.

Glad to see that you're back. ;)

I'll probably sell my Wii. I never play it. A black Wii, plus 6 games, plus 30 Virtual Console games, plus a bucket of accessories... I think I can get $500 in the next 60 days.

Boy have I turned into a raging Apple fanboy in the past year.

But the Wii is a Nintendo product. They are the leaders in cutting edge innovation to bring us the newest, freshest gaming experiences on the globe. Don't forget about all the new stuff they announced at E3. Be level headed!

Besides, what's the point if you already have an iPod Touch?

To be honest, I'm not excited at all about Nintendo's E3 last year. Mario Galaxy 2 looks fun, but I already played the first one. Zelda Wii is going to use MotionPlus, which probably means it is going to make extensive use of motion controls. That's a no-go for me. Metroid Other M doesn't really look like a Metroid game, so I don't really know what to think of it.

And I'm selling my iPod touch along with my Wii for an iPad. The screen on the iPad is just so amazing. :embarrassed:

Anyone who runs a gaming forum has to be a little crazy...

I still don't see what's to be gained through this trade. You lose the ability to play any Wii title that comes around the corner in the near future that interests you, and the ability to bring your music around with you. And probably some money still, on top of all that. All for a bigger screen. That isn't nearly as portable. Are you going to get a laptop when you go to college, or just use this? Make me understand!

Well, I already have an iPhone, so my iPod touch is pretty pointless to begin with. I got it for free, mind you. As for the Wii, the Xbox 360 is more than enough for my gaming needs. I never use my iPod touch and I never use my Wii, but I see myself using an iPad around the house, so I think it is a good trade.
